TESTING THE DESIGN LIMITS; ZUZANA LICKO
TYPOGRAPHY, EDITORIAL DESIGN
Design a typographic accordion book on the subject of a type designer of choice.
Research the typographer’s background, information about the typeface(s) she/he created and their contributions to the type/design world. The goal of this project is to establish visual hierarchy in an accordion book format, while learning about typographers and the visual characteristics of their unique typefaces. Utilize the knowledge of hierarchy, white space, composition, scale, axis, cropping, etc, during the process of crafting this book.
For my book, I chose to write about the type designer Zuzana Licko. Through research, I found she was a very experimental type designer that tested the boundaries of established type designs. Her font Filosofia was a revival of the font Bodoni. I went with a playful aesthetic that brought out the bold and playful nature of the font. I wanted to also keep my book modern and sleek to compliment that aspect of the typeface and to pay respect that it is a modern font made in the 90's.
